Stan’s Past

AFTER DURWARD STANTON’S death, his former wife Wanda claimed the body and made his arrangements. The police delivered his belongings from the seedy apartment to her, since Stan’s past and relatives remained as much a mystery as his trips. After which she contacted the Metro police about a potential murder. She knew Stan drank excessively, but always sobered up and then travelled for a month or more without drinking. She suspected he did not die from the beer, as the police report stated. Being an alcoholic, Wanda knew the difference between binge drinking hard alcohol and beer. She loved the vodka. A quart a day habit kept her life in shambles, Stan’s entrance distracted her until six months after which he started his many visits abroad. The boredom and her party friends lured her back to the booze and the powder, the habit put on hold while Stan spent his days in the living room watching re-runs and drinking cheap beer. He knew expensive clothing, cars and wine, but drank very little when out socially where he morphed into a “charmer” toward all the ladies, which contributed to her insecurity when he left. She could afford any beer or liquor. Instead, he settled for ‘Red-White-Blue.’

Something changed with Stan’s death. He kept his hand on the tiller. Day in and day out, he’d been the same man with the same tastes. He loved her; she knew that. Boredom hit her a few days after his departure, and only left when he walked through the door with a sly smile and invitation to the bedroom for as he said, ‘a road weary traveler.’ She’d been clean for weeks after she jettisoned her ‘young stud’ John Berry, whose adolescence wore on her and his crassness embarrassed her in front of her old school friends. Her excuse for John found the traditional avenue of ‘her husband never stayed home.’ She knew that Stan’s appetite for dark, exotic and elongated sex kept her floating for hours, that and her ‘quart a day and behind-the-scenes snorts of powder.’ In sobriety, her life reminded her of the weakness of her character. ‘Alone, she fled from it all.’

After his death Wanda found foreign money in Stan's personal office in which he had a desk, a computer, a printer, and closets full of his clothes. The currency included Marks, Francs, Great British Pounds, Rubles and Turkish Lira. He once gave her a 100-pound note after a business trip. The former husband possessed a few things and absolutely hated being photographed. In her lonely and thoughts of him, she felt the need to contact the Metro police again.

Duncan Hinkley’s phone rang. “Metro Homicide, Hinkley,” the detective said as he set the almost full coffee cup on the neatly organized desk.

“Ok, put her through.”

“Homicide,” he paused, “Detective Hinkley, how may I help you?”

“Hello, detective, this is Wanda Atwater. Your department found my husband, I mean former husband, dead in the Armor Arms Hotel a few weeks ago.”
